Vinyl plotters are machines which are used to print and cut out brilliant colored vinyl pieces for signs, posters, banners, etc. These signs may be for a business, for event promotion, or even for decoration or memorabilia. These vinyl plotter cutters print on bigger rolls of films with adhesive backing, with removable paper. There are extremely sharp knives which cut out the design, and possibly a control by which pressure can be adjusted, as well. This is to change how deeply the knives cut into the vinyl, to either partially or fully cut out the design. The rolling of the vinyl keeps out creases or other stress marks from the finished product.

There are several good reasons to use vinyl plotters. Among them is the unquestioned fine precision of the cutters. Also, it is more economical to have one device that will do both the cutting and printing of the sign. If a company needs numerous signs for advertisement purposes, then these machines will be both cost-efficient and a good investment.

There are many different kinds of vinyl plotters, and various criteria which can go into determining which one will be best suited for your needs. Some of these criteria include size of jobs and/or any time limits involved, materials involved, who will be operating the machine, and what sort of software may be used with the machine. For less complex jobs or smaller orders, it would be better to buy a smaller, compact sort of vinyl plotter, which would be less costly; more cost-effective! If you are using certain material that only works with a specific kind of plotter, then it is best to get that kind of plotter; whereas, if you are using a variety of materials, it is best to find a machine that will work for all of them. You need also to determine what your graphics needs are, so that you can find the software and machines to match with them. It also matters who will using the machine, as some can be more complicated to operate and would require some training. Those with simple to read LCD displays or programmable settings would be easiest to operate.

There are also digital vinyl plotters, which have more advanced controls, as far adjusting line thickness, brightness, cut depth and angle, as well as material size.
