Audio on your PC
The use of sound on PCs has come a long way over the last three decades. In the beginning, a simple speaker mounted inside the computer case was the sole source of sound, using beeps of varying tone and length as an indication of system status. Even then, creative programmers wrote software with which to modulate that sound and produce simple "synthetic" music.
But as personal computers advanced over the years, so did their ability to produce a wider and more realistic range of sounds. Music synthesizers became popular in the 80s, being an affordable way to create music and sound effects that mimicked other instruments. Being digital in nature, it was a sure thing that PCs would come to be able to read and enhance synthesized music, giving the average person a music studio in their home.
As music and sound reproduction continued to advance, the single internal speaker was no longer enough. Nor was the basic reproduction capabilities of a computer processor. This limit led to the creation and popularity of dedicated circuit boards for sound reproduction, what we now know as sound cards.
Sound cards allowed PCs to create stereo quality sound, but PC speakers couldn't play back the full range of sound they're now capable of. The solution was external speakers adapted for PC use.
